Letter from our President, Gene Redd

5-10-2011

Hello Brothers and Sisters,

I wanted to take the time to address each of you. Today's environment in our job is constantly evolving. Production seems to be the key driver for the company we work for. As we all know we don't always like the rules or the way they are implemented, but we must follow them as they relate to our jobs. Just a reminder coming to work is a key piece of the puzzle. If you are sick or absolutely can't come to work then stay home. When we are at our jobs we need to give a full day of work for a full day of pay. That doesn't include working through our breaks and lunches. The only way we can approach unobtainable objectives is to do our job as we are told to and prove it. Working through our relief periods alters the numbers and violates the Fair Labor Standards Act.

CWA is here for all of you. Our role is to bargain wages, benefits, pay, and work rules for you. Without this representation your standard of living would certainly not be what you have today. On that note please remind a non-member of this the next time you see one. Today's environment involves many challenges to us all. I don't have the chance to see all the members of the local on a regular basis but would like to advise all of you of the following. Misconduct seems to be the driver of discipline these days. Please follow the instructions that your manager gives you unless you feel it is unsafe. If you disagree advise your manager of this and contact CWA if you feel the need to do so. You also take training every year on Code of Conduct, Fair Labor Standards Act, and company policies. You all know the avenues to take if you feel there is a violation.

I would like to encourage everyone to start attending our meetings. This is the one opportunity a month you have to gain information about your job and handle the local union business. Attendance is key for the local to run. We have the National CWA meeting coming up in July. This meeting will include the election of officers for the National and District levels. We too are in an election year for the local. I would like to encourage any member interested to start attending the meetings and run for the position that you feel you could benefit the local in. If an Executive officer role is more than you want to handle we also have departmental AA's that are elected. We will have nominations for all these positions at our September meeting. The ballots will be mailed to you with a postage paid return envelope. Please take this opportunity to elect the people that you feel need to be in the leadership positions. The results will be announced at the October meeting.

Remember our July meeting will be canceled due to the DDA (Phone book distributers) renting out the hall.

I want to thank all the job stewards and volunteers who help our local run. See you at the next meeting.

In Unity,

Gene Redd
